WETT Inspections
Description
What is WETT?
WETT stands for Wood Energy Technology Transfer. It is a means for testing whether your wood-burning appliance is fire code compliant.
Why Would I Need a WETT Inspection?
Given the potential fire hazard, wood-burning appliances pose, a WETT Inspection can give you the peace of mind you need when buying or selling a home and can identify issues that should be corrected. In Canada, a WETT Inspection is required to ensure your home and making sure you have one done that can help ensure you are covered in case of fire.
When purchasing an older home that includes older wood-burning appliances, a WETT Inspection becomes even more important from a mere safety standpoint. Cottages often include wood-burning appliances, and often the installation of these features is not in compliance with WETT standards. An inspection will reveal whether or not these fire-burning appliances are operating optimally and efficiently, are in good structural and working condition, and that they burn fuel in a way that does not compromise your health and safety.
What is included in a WETT Inspection?
All Out Home Inspection is WETT certified and performs WETT Inspections according to guidelines governing the WETT specification.
While a typical home inspection includes a visual inspection of the fireplace, chimney and hearth, a specific WETT Inspection includes an inspection of all the components of any wood-burning technology in the home. This is done to make sure that all components are installed correctly, are installed with compliance with building codes and regulations, and are clean and in good working order. It also includes a visit to the roof to examine the chimney for any potential structural or ventilation issues.
The inspection includes an examination of the appliance itself, flue pipe, chimney, and wood-burning fireplaces as well the position and proximity of these devices to any combustible materials nearby.
