Asbestos is a mineral raw material that was used in construction prior to 1986 in Canada. It was used in insulation (blown-in, pipe-lining and other insulation) and in the manufacture of floor tiles, other common construction materials. Highly effective in its fire-proof application, it is also a dangerous material for your health. High exposure to asbestos or low exposure over a long period can lead to lung and other cancers many years after exposure. Asbestos causes many different types of cancer but is most known for causing Mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. Because of this health hazard, testing for asbestos in your home before renovating or demolishing is important. Work on your building of that nature can inadvertently dislodge and spread asbestos fibre becoming a breathable and ingestible hazard to workers and occupants. Sometimes even changing a simple light fixture in a home insulated with Vermiculite can release asbestos directly into the living area. Therefore, before any work is undertaken in older buildings and homes, testing for asbestos is always recommended.
